Litchi season traditionally kicks off in the December holiday period & runs for a few short weeks into January. During this time we sell our ‘famously-fresh’ litchis on-site, direct to the public. At this point we feel the nature of the litchi tree should be briefly explained:
The litchi is a very fickle tree, and is known to be very environmentally-sensitive. This means that if weather patterns in a particular year, at a particular time, are not entirely favourable for the tree (poor rains or strong winds over critical periods of flowering & fruit development), she drops flower or developing fruit. In bad years this can mean a litchi crop of next-to-nothing, whilst in good years our litchis can give us many tons of top quality fruit. This phenomenon is known as ‘alternate-bearing’and simply means that in some years there are plentiful litchis & some years there are very few… and the prices usually reflect this supply situation. We do try to ensure sufficient supply by picking other orchards in the region but with litchis there are simply no guarantees! One thing is for certain though and that is that The Litchi Orchard is your best bet when it comes to getting your annual fix of farm-fresh & juicy litchis!
